If a tree falls

"if a tree falls in the forest and no one is around to hear it, does it still make a sound?" Apparently not when it comes to a tree in PCV.  No fuss was being made over the loss of a beautiful tree.

This is the tree with the terrace that provided a lookout for squirrels. Whenever you walked by there, if you looked up you would invariably see little squirrel heads peeking down. They loved that spot!

The "terrace"

Thar she goes!
Right in the middle of winter, when the sqirrels are competing for warm places to sleep, the Tree Experts decide that it's a good time to cut down one of our favorite squirrel trees. I've often advocated building squirrel shelters, and here they were, taking them away!  I was shocked and could barely believe what I saw when I arrived this morning. Here's what was left when I got there:

hey -- wha hoppen?

there was only one hollow section, where the squirrels lived

the rest of the tree was sturdy

I understand that there's money to be made from selling good wood. By the looks of it, somebody made some money. With the exception of the one hollow section that was being used by the squirrels as a home and "terrace", the tree was in pretty good shape. A bystander said that when they took the tree down there were many squirrels inside. I can imagine! Well aside from the disfigurement of the landscape, the loss of this tree means more competition for space on cold winter days and nights, and more suffering and death for the squirrels. A tree falls, but does anybody care?

  1. Such a shame! How could such a blissful piece of nature be removed? I swear that they do it to get to us.
